Missing out?

We’ve watched a little bit of TV since we’ve been in Mexico, and a fair bit of it is American in origin. Which brings up two questions:

1. I wasn’t a big Headline News (HLN) watcher before we moved to Germany, but I though that it was news that gave you the headlines. Instead, it appears to be very angry, aggressive women and their angry guests shouting about really lurid, horrifying crimes and the court cases that result from them. Is that about right? So what does HLN stand for now? Harassing Lurid Nasties? Horrid Ladies Network?

2. Beastmaster is a truly dreadful movie that is very funny because of its colossal badness. Marc Singer, his body oil, John Amos and Rip Freakin’ Torn. With leather diapers and weasels. It’s like it was designed for a drinking game.

When not asking our doctors if various prescription medicines are right for us or eagerly awaiting Jamie Lee Curtis’s next anal bull on our nation’s regularity(ack-tiv-ee-YA!), we like to break up our days with awful, awful stories of murdered children and missing white ladies. And then Joy Behar comes on -look! Fran Drescher’s serving up humor AND advice on cancer screenings!- so we get a nice little easy chuckle before we fall asleep.

Seriously? Nothing else was on? Maybe a channel with nothing but snow and white noise?

Beastmaster! Snort! That IS an awful movie. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. I wish I could watch it now just for the laughs. And don’t forget the red-headed chick (can’t remember her name) who goes into epileptic fits to call the animals.

Beastmaster, yes! I live for this sort of late-night entertainment! The next best thing to the low budget sci-fi/fantasy saga is the low budget (or hell, even the big budget) disaster film. They’re so bad that it’s obvious the acting is bad and the lines are terrible even when translated into German. Although always thoroughly terrible, I’m always disappointed when I find an animal-hunting-human movie, though.

I think Beastmaster definitely qualifies as “Don’t watch when you are an adult unless you want to NOT remember your favorite childhood movies fondly!” It fits in a category with “Gremlins”, “Neverending Story”, “He-Man”, “Highlander”, and who can forget “Goonies?”

Lord, I loved Beastmaster. I had ferrets myself at the ime, so i was annoyed at how they dubbed in the rat chittering. But I loved Marc Singer in everything 25 years ago, from the sublime (The Taming of the Shrew) through The Visitors and all the way into Beastmaster (which I had thought was stolen from the wonderful pulp Andre Norton of the same title, but really wasn’t).
But HLN- I can’t watch US news, except local and PBS, without becoming ill. Even CNN is unwatchable, while here in Europe it’s bad, in the US it’s insanely bad. So bad, Lou Dobbs went from a decent economics/market expert, to a psychotic fringed out maniac.
Argh. And HLN started out as the headlines of CNN stories, for people who had less time to watch the news . I think it has remained that way, but the CNN under it is a psychotic station for freaks.
