Mom’s Curried Fruit

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAUse fruit in its own juice and drain well, then pat dry. The fruit will make more juice as it bakes.

1 (16 oz) can sliced pears, well drained
1 (20 oz) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 (15 oz) can apricot halves, drained
1 (15 oz) can sliced peaches
6-8 Maraschino cherries
1/2 cup packed (105 g) brown sugar
3 tsp curry powder
2 tbsp (25 g) butter

Preheat over to 325°F (163°C).
Drain the fruit and arrange it in an oven-proof casserole dish. Melt butter or margarine. Mix the sugar and the curry powder together with butter, pour over the top of the fruit.
Bake at 325°F (163°C) 60 minutes.

It’s more than 3 feet, but I don’t think it’s rising any more.

Y’all heard about this? We’re not nearly as affected as places further South, like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, for example, but these are still some drastic changes in the landscape

Bolzano

We’re getting ready for our first trip to Italy — a long weekend in Bolzano (a.k.a. Bozen).

It’s 4ish hours directly South of Munich by train. It has only belonged to Italy since the end of WWI, and before that has belonged to Austria and been independent and stuff like that. So, I gather it’s not going to be all “old-country Italy” — probably more like that town where Pinocchio was from in that there might be a lot of people with Italian names and German accents (ever notice that?).

Or just a lot of German speakers in general. When we went to Prague in May to visit Molly, it was entirely swamped with Germans… but that’s kind of how they are, I guess.

Oh yeah, I was hoping to get your thoughts on these before now, but apparently it takes exactly two weeks (the whole length of our recent trip in the U.S.A.) for Ye Olde Optometriste to process an order like these (drill-mount, with non-stick coating or something). So I didn’t get around to posting them until now.

All my AA cells are dead or charging at the moment, so below are my attempts at the camera-phone self-portrait (something Carrie Jo does much better than I do). Whatcha think? Better than the old ones?

cheese safari

Sarah and I spent Saturday in Munich on a cheese safari.

Well, OK, it was intended for cheese, but it actually yielded lots of other stuff…cheese-wise, it was a complete bust.

Still we got to see Mr. & Mrs. Smith at Cinema München, a movie theater about a two hours away from us by various kinds of train (thank you, Bayern-Ticket), and we stocked up on some good old-fashioned Americana at Hertie (or is it Karstadt?), an upscale grocery/department store. Specifically, Pop-Tarts® in the blueberry and strawberry varieties, Campbell’s® Cream of Mushroom Soup. We were saddened by our lack of success on the cheese front, so we scouted out the nearest Starbucks Coffee and consoled ourselves with Frappucinos. I tend to try a new one everytime — that Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino® is a thing of beauty, but Sarah stays true to her Caramel Frappuccino®.

So what kind of cheese did we need so badly that it had to turn into a safari? Specifically, Cheddar and Monterrey Jack. Our good pal Jentry departed from Germany for her native state and left us some Ro*Tel® Original Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies, which we love to melt up with said cheese for dipping pleasure, and we were hoping to use that to emulate the Margarita Dip. Alas, even though we’d read rumors online of cheddar and monterrey jack and other neat American foody things available at places like Hertie/Karstadt, our cheese safari to Munich turned out fruitless.

Still it was a great day — none of the rain that had been predicted showed up.
