eurovision — seriously, these people mean it

OK, where have we been for the last two years!? How have we missed the Eurovision song contest?

This stuff is **incredibly** bad.

**Lithuania — the Stuart Smalleys of the semi-finals** We are the winners of Eurovision
We are, we are! We are, we are!
We are the winners of Eurovision
We are, we are! We are, we are!

So, you gotta vote,
Vote, vote for the winners
Vote, vote, vote for the winners

We are the winners of Eurovision
(de Vilnius city a Paris)
(LT United ici)
We are the winners of Eurovision
(chantons la meme chanson)
(‘cos we got it goin’ on)

06_iceland_2006_right **Iceland’s entry got booed through-out — with good reason.**
(phone – conversation)
Hello is it god?
What’s up dog?
It’s your favourite person in the world Silvia Night
I’m saving the world
See you…bye

So congratulations I have arrived
I’m Silvia Night and I’m shining so bright
Eurovision nation your dreams will come true
You’ve been waiting forever
For me to save you
Wham bam boom

dima No lyrics necessary, just look at that fine Russian mullet.

and who could forget Lordi from Finland?

Oh Cliff baby – you need a refresher course in irony and sarcasm.

Surely, Eurovision is totally evil, and most of the stuff that is offered there is somewhere between tastless and idiotic.

Now every year there is an entry or two that choose to openly mock the entire Eurovision contest. This year, the entries from Lithuania (LT United), Iceland (Silvia) and Finland (Lordi) are exactly these. They make fun of Eurovision and of all the talentless cattle that performs there – so no wonder they got booed by the very serious and self-important Greek audience.

Check out the post-semi-finals press conference of LT United, where they openly stated, “We can’t believe this crap got us to the finals”.

I surely hope they (or Lordi, who are absolutely hilarious) win. Certainly this is only a hope, with all the Balcan micro-countries voting for each other.

    Hi Dexter,

Thanks for the comment. Maybe it’s just because it’s been a long week at the office (for me) and the effect of a mysterious cold on my wife (which is finally clearing up, thank goodness), but I totally missed the sarcasm and irony in acts like those. It could also be due to our return to Europe after a few weeks in the NAFTA region that we were shell-shocked and unable to separate the serious attempts from the intentionally utter crap.

Looking back on it today, after a chance to separate myself from it, it’s hard for me to understand how I could have missed it, but I did.

Well, I was really pulling for the modestly attired and lyrically humble Silvia Night, but it looks like Lordi wins.

What's your take on it?
