resistance is futile

I’ve caved in to social pressures and have started reading Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen. The “social pressures” mostly consisted of Sarah getting irritated with my questions about plot points in the movies over the years.

Tammy has graciously lent us the first two books in German. Sarah started the first one back on our cruise and quickly picked up speed. I’m tearing through Stein der Weisen. It helps that she’s looked up all the words I don’t know (which are surprisingly few, I’m happy to report). If I didn’t have to go to work tomorrow, I’d probably finish the book.

*hack* *cough* *hock* *clang*

Oh man, I think my cold just took a turn for the worse — and just when I was starting to feel better, too!

Oh, no! No! You have to read them in English. You’ll miss all the punning and slick language stuff. I’ll lend them to you if you promise to return them. You must know I trust you and Sarah.

I’ve got em all in English too if you so desire. I think a lot of the puns and play on words was translated well into the appropriate German. I didn’t catch all of it, but Matthias noticed it.

@Margot: The starting in German is all part of my devious plot to get him to just read it in English, too. The translation is well done, but the language stuff doesn’t hit you as viscerally if you’re reading outside of your mother tongue.

@Tammy: Thanks again for loaning them to us. Cliff is flying through Stein der Weisen and will be ready for Kammer des Schreckens before I finish it!

What's your take on it?
