The votes are in and Nürnberg ended up running away with WEBMU 2014, but we still need to settle on a date. The dates that are best for the organizers (full disclosure: we’re a couple of the organizers) are up over in the forums now. Go take a look and choose the date or dates that are best for you and we can nail this thing down.

Need access to the forums? Let us know that you’re not a bot and we’ll take care of it. Have local Nürnberg knowledge that you’re just dying to share? Leave a comment and we’ll get you involved.

WEBMU 2014 Location Voting Open

Doge

The nominations are in and it’s time to vote! There are a quite a few more cities and regions to choose from than last year, including a couple of repeats and one far-flung locale.

What is WEBMU you ask? Why, it’s the Whiny Expat Bloggers Meet Up. Click the link for a little history on the event.

Voting will close on March 31, 2014. That’s two whole weeks to see what’s on offer, find out more about the options, engage in some campaigning and debate and cruise the blogs of potential participants. To vote, go check out this thread in the Expat Bloggers in Germany Forums. Can’t access the forums? Let us know here or on Twitter (@ExpatBloggersDE) and we will get you taken care of.

Happy voting!

WEBMU 2014 Location Proposals

We seem to be getting an earlier start on the Whiny Expat Blogger MeetUp planning this year. Matter of fact, there have already been several proposed locations in the Gathering Ideas thread. So far, the following places have been discussed:

  • Wine-regions (Rhine/Mosel area – click the squiggle on the map)
  • Hamburg (repeat?)
  • Nürnberg
  • Flensburg
  • Würzburg
  • Regensburg

Not all of the suggestions have local hosts, so if you know one of those places and feel like showing it off, let us know. We’re entertaining suggestions until March 15. Stop by the forums and tell us what you think!

WEBMU 2013: Field Trip to Prague!

The planning of our annual Whiny Expat Bloggers Meet-Up has been kind of different this year. I tend to think that the nearly nonexistent Spring lulled people into feeling that it was miles away and we were slogging on about it way early. Plus, there was a lingering hangover of fabulousity from WEBMU 2012 Berlin. Now, Autumn is making itself felt and we’re under a month out. So to help with your short-term planning, a small reminder:

WEBMU 2013: Prague! Sept. 20-22

Ok, maybe not so small.

It’s time for WEBMU to take its show on the road! A little Bohemian adventure to cleanse the porky German palate! There will be a firm schedule up shortly in the forums and we’ll have a few hotel recommendations as well.

See you in September!

I love it when a WEBMU comes together…

Are you interested in attending the expat blogger meetup that’s sweeping the BRD? Then it’s time to check in on the Whiny Expat Blogger MeetUp forums, where the planners are looking for input. If you’re an English language blogger living in Germany and you don’t have an account yet, go sign up already! We need a little input from you and have some more details on what’s in store, so check out the Friday side trip, who’s coming and Hotels threads.

If you’re on the fence about coming, a word of warning: there is a consumer electronics trade show taking place that same weekend in Berlin. As a result, accommodations are becoming scarce. So you might need to decide soon whether you’re going to attend in order to get a room or apartment. That’s addressed in more detail in the Hotels thread.

Any questions? Feel free to ask here or, better yet, in the forums. And I hope to see you all in Berlin!

WEBMU 2011 In Pictures

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to our illustrious hosts for a great weekend of culture, gastronomy, history, and — most importantly, in my book — general merriment. This was the 4th annual WEBMU event we’ve attended, and every year it’s such a pleasure to chat and laugh with those faces and voices we otherwise only get to read.

To everyone who couldn’t make it this year: here’s hoping next year works out for you. This was a blast.

the home stretch to WEBMU 2011 in Cologne

As noted on expatbloggersingermany.com, there are just three weeks left until WEBMU 2011 in Cologne is officially underway. (Unofficially, it gets started with a side trip to Aachen one day earlier.)

Our knowledgeable hosts have designed a stimulating agenda, made accommodation recommendations and even summarized the local Kölner ÖPNV* system for you — all on our discussion board over at http://www.expatbloggersingermany.com/meetup/. Sign up there today, if you haven’t already, to get the full scoop. Any expatriate in Germany blogging in English is most welcome!

*I love how some concepts, like “mass transit” are expressed in English sometimes with just a few syllables, but have huge German counterparts, like Öffentlicher Personennahverkehr. But they retain that reputation for efficiency, deservedly or not, for compacting those ten syllables down to just four in everyday usage. Similar examples:

English German (full) German (shortened)
Trainee Auszubildende(r) Azubi
Public broadcasting fee collection agency Gebühreneinzugszentrale GEZ
Technical Inspection Association Technischer Überwachungs-Verein TÜV
Terms & Conditions Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen AGB

WEBMU 2011 Cologne — Agenda

The Whiny Expat Bloggers MeetUp in Cologne this year now has its own agenda.

If you live in Germany, and blog about that (or other stuff) in English, then come visit Cologne with us in October. We’ll whine collectively while touring and eating and laughing. Sign up on our discussion board to get the full load of details — and they’re looking really good, thanks to your hosts.

On our discussion board, you’ll find ideas about where to stay, how to get there and — the best part — who-all will be attending. I can’t wait to see old pals and meet new ones!

Will you join us at WEBMU 2011?

There’s a poll up at the ExpatBloggersInGermany.com board seeking your input. Just a real basic question — “Are you coming to the Whiny Expat Blogger MeetUp 2011?” — and Yes/No/Maybe options for your response. You can change your vote as often as you like while the hosts are planning the agenda.

If you’re an expatriate living in Germany blogging in English, come on out to Cologne in October for a weekend of laughter and comiserating. If you’re new to our discussion board, you can register right there too — just don’t forget to mention your blog’s internet address and your (rough) location in Germany.
